    1. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE THICKNESS GAUGE MG-105

     

    The MG-105 thickness gauge belongs to the newest generation of measuring devices with high accuracy of the measurements and very easy operation. The newest generation electronic elements used in the meter made it’s memory independent to power supply and have ensured very low power consumption what greatly increases the operation time on 1 set of battery. The meter is equipped with the LCD display, which enables observing the results of measurements in µm ( 1 µm = 1/1000 mm). Thanks to the Auto-Hold function the meter may hold each stabilised result on the display for 10 seconds. The MG-105 enables measurements of the nonmagnetic layer (lacquer, varnish, foil, plastic) laid on magnetic surfaces (steel). Waterproof housing makes working in difficult conditions possible. Minimised size and weight make working in the field easier.

     

     

    2. SWITCHING THE METER ON AND OFF

     


    After switching the meter on with the  button, all symbols are displayed on the display and the meter’s memory is tested (pic. 2). If the test was positive the meter automatically switches it self, after 2 seconds, to the measuring mode. Continuous display of all symbols appears when the calibration parameters are lost, the repair in the service is required

    The MG 105 is switched off by pressing the . button. If the meter wasn’t switched off, the auto off function switches it off after five minutes of non-use what protects the batteries against discharging.

     


     

     

    2.1. Switching on and off the Auto-Hold function

     

    To switch on or off the Auto-Hold function it is it is necessary to switch off the meter than switch it o and hold the  button till the end of the display test. If the function earlier was turned off on the display a  symbol will be dispalyed and the meter will enter the measuring mode with the Auto-Hold function turned on. If the function was on a  symbol will be displayed and the meter will enter the measuring mode with the Auto-Hold function turned off.

     

    3. MEASUREMENT

     

    To start the measurement press the   button to switch on the meter, take the protective cap off the measuring head. The meter must be lightly pressed perpendicularly to the measured surface. After a while the meter stabilise and the result will be displayed on the LCD in µm. During measurements of rounded surfaces the meter should be held on the extension of radius of this curvature (perpendicularly). But such a measurement is more difficult and bigger error may occur.

    In case of measurements with the Auto-Hold function the meter signalises with a sound that the result is stabilised and holds the result for 10 seconds, from the moment of taking off the sensor from the measured surface, on the display. Pressing the sensor to the surface before the 10 seconds time resets the Auto-Hold and starts new measurement.

     

    Notice: the meter is calibrated by the manufacturer on 1,5 mm steel plate. During the measurements on thin surfaces (5mm or more) the readings may be lower for about 5 ÷ 8%.

     


     

     

    4. USING THE THICKNESS METER TO MEASURE THE

    CAR BODY

     

    The thickness meter  MG-105 enables measurements of lacquer coating on cars. Basing on this measurements it is possible to state whether the car body was repaired, how big were the damages and how the repairs were made.

     

    The measurement of the layers on the metal basis enable controlling whether the lacquer coating on the car is a standard one or maybe it has middle thickness or is very thick, very easy. Thanks to it we can define whether some more serious repairs were made on the car body, or  a second layer of the lacquer was laid on the original one. Nevertheless in this case sometimes it is hard to get unambiguous results. If some parts of the car body were changed for new ones and they were correctly painted the meter won’t detect this kind of repair

    Microcontroller used in this meter ensures high accuracy of the measurement, during which the thickness of the layer (nonmagnetic) between the measuring head and the metal surface is checked

     

    Depending on the chemical composition of the steel and the way it was prepared some differences in readings may appear when comparing this same layers of the varnish (lacquer). Practically it has no meaning during controlling. Very important has the correct method of making the measurement and correct interpretation of the results, in which the given instruction should be helpful.


     

     

    5. RULES OF CHECKING THE CAR BODY

     

    Basing on the studies led on the new and used cars, also repaired ones, one may draw a conclusion, which is given in the table.

    Unfortunately not in all situations everything is completely clear. To measuring thickness on car which was repaired with filler after crash is easy, and shouldn’t make any troubles. It is much harder to get the information weather the car body was painted for the second time. It is easier to answer this question when one know how thick is the original coating of the varnish on new car.. Included table with thickness of varnish on some cars which were not painted or repaired, may be helpful during the measurements.

     

     

     

     


     

     

    From our experience we know that over 95% of all cars have varnish layers not thicker than 130 mm. About 4% of cars have varnish layers about 150 mm, but about 1% have lacquer coating thicker than 150 mm. Different cars have different thickness of original varnish, also in this same car the thickness of varnish may be different on different body parts. If on the bigger part of the body the thickness is above 150 mm up to 200 mm one may assume that the whole car body or it’s part was painted for the second time without making any serious repairs. In case when this situation appears it is a signal to take a closer and more careful look to find places with thicker layers made during more serious repairs. The above given advice is not real for all cars, because in some of them the original varnish layer is thicker than 150 mm, for example in OPEL ASTRA II, in which the varnish has up to 190 mm. There are also situations that in the factory some parts are painted for the second time, and the new car is above the norm (sometimes the varnish coating is two times thicker). Such accidents are very rare but we have noticed them in few cars.

    There is no connection between the varnish thickness and it’s quality, in some new cars like Mercedes, BMW, Honda the thickness of varnish is about 100 mm and the quality is very good.

    In some cars some body elements are made of plastic (like front fenders in Mercedes class A or in Renault Scenic etc.) in this situation the meter won’t show the lacquer thickness. It is important to remember that the meter measures only on ferrous metal surfaces.

     

     


     

     

    5. REPLACING THE BATTERIES

     

    When on the display a  sign is displayed on turns with the measured value the batteries should be changed. To change the batteries it is necessary to unscrew the top of the meter and than pull the tape, remove the three used batteries and replace them with the new ones (type LR44, 1,5V).

    The batteries may be bought in a shop with electrical or electronic equipment or directly in manufacturer company.

    During changing the batteries it is necessary to pay attention whether the tape is placed correctly under the batteries. and the batteries were inserted in the right direction according to the marks. All batteries have to be placed with the correct side in this same direction (+ or -) The – sign must be on the side of flat spring and the + on the side of spiral spring. Wrong placing of the batteries may destroy the meter. The picture given below will make the inserting of the batteries easier

    The easiest way to insert the batteries is to slip them starting from the side of flat spring, and pressing them on the spiral spring. At the end it is very important to remember about correct screwing the top.

     

     

     


     

     

    6. EXPLOITATION NOTICES

     

    The meter is fully waterproof and was checked by the manufacturer. The tightness is ensured by three sealing rings, described on the picture. Before screwing it is necessary to check whether the rings are on the right place, and then to screw the meter correctly. If the nut and top won’t be screwed tightly the meter will be flooded, and damaged. This type of damage is not covered by the warranty. Continuous lighting of all elements of the LCD indicates that the calibration values were lost, or the meter is damaged. In this situation the meter should be returned to the service. The housing of the meter isn’t high temperature (above 150 0C) and solvents resistant
